Future Uses

BXB Wolsingham Limited are currently in the process preparing a comprehensive masterplan for the whole site. Following further consultation with the local planning authority, it’s likely that this exercise will address the following known items:

  • Highways
  • Landscape and Visual
  • Ground Conditions
  • Flood Risk and Drainage
  • Ecology
  • Arboriculture
  • Utilities
  • Heritage and Conservation
  • Design and Amenity Considerations
  • Planning Obligations

Key to delivering a comprehensive masterplan is liaising and consulting with the community and key stakeholders. We have an open mind and are keen to hear people’s views.

We will then prepare a masterplan for the site and host a full public exhibition for the people of Wolsingham to explore and comment on our proposals. But you don’t have to wait until then: you can offer your thoughts via the Contact Us section of this web site.

Once we have concluded our consultation, we will submit a planning application to Durham County Council, which we hope to do by late Spring-time, 2020.

The Site

Wolsingham Ironworks was founded in 1864 and was a major employer in the area for a century and a half. The site produced high grade steel for ship building and munitions, using the very finest Weardale ore.
